shopping list! PreCodes, Peck & Beav
week of Jan 31

To Kill a Mockingbird is released in 3 different packages for the movie’s 50th anniversary: there’s a DVD, a Blu-ray + DVD set, and an ultimate collectors’ edition Blu-ray + book + digital copy (as seen in the second pic). Each version offers various combinations of features, including Gregory Peck’s Oscar speech, an interview with Mary Badham, restoration documentary & many more befitting this essential classic.
.
a fistful of intriguing pre-code era rarities starring some underrated folks, this week from Warner Archive:
<– click this pic to go to WAC and see goodies including but not limited to:
The Idle Rich, directed by CB DeMille’s older brother William
Man to Man, with Dwight Frye from Dracula and impossibly cute heartthrob Philips Holmes, who died at 35 in a plane crash after graduation from the Royal Canadian Air Force. Funny thing, Holmes plays “Michael Bolton”… so many jokes…
Voice of the City, directed & co-written by Willard Mack, who’s credited as “discovering Barbra Stanwyck (she’s not in this movie though, but Mack is, playing a detective).
other new releases:
Leave It to Beaver: 20 Timeless episodes
Three stooges in 3D—ok this deserves a note, this is 4 public domain titles, and not the actual 3D movies the stooges did make.

not technically “classic but might be of interest: Agatha Christie’s Poirot on DVD + Blu series 1 & 2.
leave your pick of the week, recommendations for others on what’s worth their money, great buys you made recently, stuff you wish was coming out soon, stuff you’re really looking forward to, stuff I missed, any other thoughts, opinions etc…

Kristina, I love SPEAKEASY’s clean and classy new look as much as I love the great DVDs you’re ballyhooing! I’m especially interested in the POIROT DVDs (with all due respect to past actors playing Hercule Poirot, David Suchet is my favorite) and the deluxe TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD set is a fan’s dream! As always, your writing is fun to read, and you’ve whet my appetite for more fab films to keep an eye on!

yay! thanks for the kind words on the overhaul! glad you like it
and now I’m glad I mentioned the Poirot dvds as well. I’ll try to throw in more like that from now on.
I really am impressed with these disc+Booklet releases lately– nicely designed to look good on collectors’ shelves.
thank you! :)
