classic stuff always on tap

First Look: Dark Pages Jan/Feb issue

So, have you been good lately? I mean good enough to deserve yet another supersized issue of DARK PAGES just after the GIANT holiday mega-Double Indemnity issue? Probably not, knowing you the way I do, but you’re getting one anyway, and you’ll like it, if you’re a lucky subscriber that is. Some of the great stuff brought to you by the Dark Pages mob in this issue ismemorable music from noir, editor Karen’s list of 10 lesser known noirs that won’t be ignored, and let her also count the many ways that The Big Heat is awesome. Rounding out the all-star cast there are appearances by Elisha Cook Jr, the Cortez brothers, some interesting brainteasers and noir stars’ first jobs.

I have an actor’s bio in this issue, plus my regular “Deadly is the Screen” noir viewing calendar this time including The Mask of Dimitrios, its making, its actors, its director, its music, and its real life inspiration, one fascinating, mysterious and ever-present weapons dealer. I also look at Nobody Lives Forever, another film by Dimitrios director Jean Negulesco.

You should really break open that piggy bank and think about subscribing if you love noir, and now it will get even easier, cheaper and more tempting (insert your own joke here) since the DP now gives you the option of a paperless/ e/pdf subscription, just visit this subscription page and check out the drop down menu. Keep in mind if you order the paperless, that means the postman won’t ring even once at your house, but if you are the type who hugs trees, or are just impatient and want your issue hot off the server instead of the presses, then you can satisfy all those desires AND save a lot of dough. It’s a win win. You can also learn more about Dark Pages here at Speakeasy.

  1. Lorre, Greenstreet, and THE MASK OF DIMITRIOS — Kristina, I’m there! I’ll keep an eye on my mailbox (I’m an old-fashioned girl) for the next issue of THE DARK PAGES!

    • Hi Dorian! call it old-fashioned but there’s something to say about having the postman ring your bell.
      so to speak.
it’s a real nice issue, and I hope my lengthy foray into the actual history behind Dimitrios (one of my faves) will entertain readers as much as it did me. Lorre+Greenstreet=awesome in any movie,
      best ! Kristina
