June Guide to Classics on TV

a huge roundup of full-month previews and picks! Learn about the month ahead here…

June TCM star of the month is ELEANOR PARKER (tcm link) means the airing of an amazing amount of great movies every Monday, and that includes stuff like DETECTIVE STORY and SCARAMOUCHE. There are plenty of tributes & spotlights to make film geeks happy, on noir writers every Friday night, Jane Russell, D Day, Patricia Medina, Lana Turner, Father’s DayRalph Bellamy, Basil Rathbone, Jean-Paul Belmondo , Anthony Mann westerns, Judy Holliday and many more, and the May guest Programmer is menswear designer Joseph Abboud who understandably focuses on dashing men like Errol Flynn and Cary Grant.

Just a few of many must-sees I can recommend are WESTWARD THE WOMEN with Robert Taylor, and A WOMAN’S FACE which to me was Joan Crawford’s best role (both must-MUST-sees), suspenser with Lucille Ball LURED, noirs DETOUR, and THE HIGH WALL, ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT and pre-code BABY FACE .

Essentials, Jr. returns with a fun pirates double feature, and I say fun because pirates AARRRRRRRR.

I haven’t had the time to fully obsess over my whole month schedule yet but a few movies I’m looking forward to seeing for the first time: TCM underground title THE PSYCHOPATH, one of the cult movie picks THE VAMPIRE, SCREAMING EAGLES, THE THIRTEENTH CHAIR, and that Anthony Mann spotlight reminds me I already have DEVIL’S DOORWAY and need to watch it finally.

As usual I don’t give you all the details because everyone linked from here has unique picks, so here’s your roundup of some bloggers’ looks at the month ahead:

Your Guide to Classics on TV in OCT

a huge roundup of full-month previews and picks! Learn about the month ahead here…

Spencer Tracy is TCM’s star of the month, with 52 showings (his films plus documentaries) there are some great documentaries to embiggen your brain on the subjects of Cinerama, political movies and A History of Disability in Film, and naturally there will be various & sundry spooks and horrors. In lieu of the lost joy of perusing and marking up a print TV guide, here now is your roundup of select bloggers’ looks at OCTOBER:

Thrilling Days of Yesteryear goes into much more detail breaking down each theme of the month, hilites Walter Matthau’s birthday, great character actor James Gleason, OCT 21 is Fleischer Studios & UPA animation day, Harryhausen on the 28th

Immortal Ephemera the usual richly illustrated post wherein Cliff has a two faced classic as his pick of the month, plus THE LETTER 1929 version, OCT 11 Lew Landers RKO B-movie heaven,  OCT 18 Miriam Hopkins day

Laura’s Misc Musings for TCM, for FOX MC   ( & her previous quick looks posts) – she likes PARTY GIRL, as do I, the UNINVITED with Ray Milland is a must-see. Haven’t seen SHADOW OF A WOMAN,  looking forward to that

Journeys in Classic Film includes another vote for THE UNINVITED,  & the William Castle documentary in her hilites (which is where I got the lead Castle pic up there)

Hollywood Revue director Robert Aldrich on the 11th, Jackie Coogan on the 26th, the 24th is LITERALLY a great movie day
